This past weekend, in my attempt to have fun and see more of Miami, I went to a couple of the "party places" near my apartment. I never thought in a long time that I'd ever experience blatant racism. I've tried all of my life to work very hard so that I wouldn't have to deal with the ignorant BS that racism is. I can't deny coming from a working family. We had just enough and sometimes a little more, but we were by no means rich or well-to-do. I'm one of the few that went to college, the first to get a Masters and will be the first PHD. I'm working hard so that my children can see that indeed hard work can accomplish things and make dreams come true.
I went into an establishment, paid cover and couldn't get served at the bar. The bartenders looked us straight in the face and helped the people around us. After my companion was visibly upset and made this clear to the manager, they expected us to wait 5 more minutes (after the 20+ minutes we already waited) for a drink. Needless to say, we were out of there. After arriving to another place, paying double the cover, the same thing happened. I wanted water (I already had Patron from earlier that evening) and he wanted a beer. It took him fussing with the bartender that he had been waiting for 15 minutes while she straightened napkins after taking his order before the beer and water were prepared. We walked around and took a seat. After 30 more minutes of being ignored by other servers waiting on the tables around us, we left. My companion, again made it clear that he didn't appreciate the service in such an establishment and the reply was an uninspiring "sorry".
I don't understand why service must be different if the money is all green. I've heard great things about Miami and my experience so far has been mixed. What I do know is that this place is NOT for me. I'm almost speechless that I make more money than the average American and can't get service in a bar. Yes...it's different than my fat butt trying to shop in Express...
